Do research on this employer:

Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS), headquartered in Austin, Texas, is the world's No. 1 producer of embedded processors. We create system-on-chip technologies for wireless communications, networking and automotive applications; and standard products that deliver embedded processing and connectivity capabilities for millions of devices throughout the world. SPS' sales were $4.9 billion (USD) in 2001. We employ approximately 26,000 people at manufacturing facilities, laboratories, technology/design centers and sales offices around the globe.

Our Role Within the Motorola Corporation
The businesses that comprise Motorola, Inc. focus on building value for customers and shareholders by providing integrated communications and embedded electronic solutions centered on three high-growth technology platforms: wireless, broadband and the Internet. Value is created by providing solutions in the form of embedded systems-on-chip, modules, complete end-to-end networked systems and standard products. The role of SPS is to make this possible by delivering semiconductor and software technologies, as well as by licensing items from our extensive intellectual property portfolio.

We Connect the World
Motorola's semiconductors are connecting the world. Today 2.5G and 3G (third-generation) handsets with advanced functionality, such as video streaming, networked games and built-in cameras, are appearing in markets in many regions. Advanced embedded processors are driving these capabilities, and Motorola is leading the way with our Innovative Convergence platforms, which contain all of the processing power, tools and software required to build next-generation handsets.

Our networking solutions are essential parts of the pipeline through which most of the world's information flows. In fact, 80 percent of the world's Internet traffic is managed by Motorola's communications processors. Motorola offers the most comprehensive networking semiconductor portfolio, led by our flagship integrated communications and host processors, and further strengthened by our network, digital signal (DSP) and security processors.

Motorola's semiconductors can be found in the vast majority of automobiles. There are Motorola microcontrollers (MCUs), sensors and microprocessors (MPUs) within the powertrain (engine and transmission), and safety features such as airbags and antilock brakes. And, there will be embedded processors in the next generation of steering and braking systems as mechanical systems are converted to electronics. In addition, Motorola is enabling many advances in driver information technology, such as digital radio, global positioning systems, Web access and e-mail.

Our portfolio of standard products - including MCUs, MPUs, DSPs, analog products and sensors - provide embedded processing and connectivity capabilities for millions of devices. In 2000, the average person encountered nearly 250 embedded controllers every day. That number is expected to grow to 351 by 2010 (Source: Semico Research Corp, 2002). With more than eight billion processors currently in use, Motorola's embedded electronic solutions are everywhere and permeate virtually all advanced technology applications.
